Desktop Dinosaur Versus Laptop LaserMan!

That title sounds like some cheesy comic book; so why not write it like one? Here it goes…

Laptop LaserMan says, “Not so fast, Desktop! You step on that building, and I’ll break your bones!”

The Desktop Dinosaur laughs haughtily, spreading its tiny arms out and thrashing its massive tail. The world shakes madly with disgust and fear at the slow but utterly powerful ferocity of the beast. Laptop LaserMan then glides fast toward the Dinosaur, wrapping a band of kryptonite cellophane round its alien gargantuan tree-trunk legs, pulling hard to drop the horrid monster to the ground! Laptop LaserMan is victorious!

Okay, end of cheesy comic book; you get the picture.

The fact is the electronic consumer world is hitting a point where mobility is crucial in the day-to-day tasks regarding the Internet and business. You’re finding more and more CEOs, CPAs and PhDs handling more LCDs, USBs and HDMIs and downloading software from sites like openoffice.org with a laptop in the middle of Panera Bread than with a desktop in a cubicle. Face it: laptops are becoming much more popular than desktops.

However (and that’s a big ‘however’), customizing a desktop is a lot easier and better to handle than customizing a laptop. The fact is a desktop can hold more memory and therefore run faster and cleaner (even though Desktop Dinosaur moved slower). Again, though, a desktop just sits there! And while your documents you created with openoffice are mobile, your desktop isn’t.  You can’t take it to a Starbucks. You can’t take it to a park. You can’t even sit on your bed in front of the TV with it. Once you hook the big monster up with all those cords, that’s it. There’s no moving it.

So Laptop LaserMan, with his cool laser beam cannons hooked onto his back and his ability to break the sound barrier, light barrier, water barrier, blood barrier, even the concrete barrier, puts him generally slightly above the hunkier beasts on the market. But only slightly…
