Electronic Tablets and laptops are all the rage in home computing these days. The portability and flexibility they offer makes them convenient to use almost anywhere as long as the user has access to wireless hot spots. The only question is: how do you find what hot spots are available in the area and how to connect?
The key to being able to connect to a wireless network is a special adapter that may be built in to your laptop or may have to be purchased separately. There are several choices in what type of adapter to use. They include Ethernet cards, PC cards or USB devices. The network adapter should provide instructions for installation as soon as you plug it into your laptop.
There are several ways to find wireless hot spots where you can access the internet. A handy gadget known as a Wi-Fi finder will electronically scan the area you are in and will list the available networks and their signal strength. Newer laptops and tablets also provide a similar service which will scan for wireless internet sites you can hook into, or use the connections tool on the desktop.
If you will be travelling, you can go online in advance to find out where in that area you can find wireless service. Many hotels now provide Wi-Fi, though many may charge for the service. There are coffee shops and lunch spots which offer wireless service for free to people who come into their locations and make a purchase.
Users do need to be cautious when using public wireless connections. These are not always secure so there is the possibility that other people on the same network may be able to see what you are doing. Experts say never access bank accounts or other private information when you are on public Wi-Fi.
